JOHN HENRY BENTLEY (1842-1912) & 1. SARAH WING, 2. NANCY SPERBECK

John Henry Bentley was born 4/5/1842 in New York. It is not yet absolutely certain, but he appears to be the son of William & Louisa Bentley of Verona, Oneida, NY. One interesting fact is that William's profession in 1850 was a cooper. In 1860 Greenfield, William was still a cooper, as was John Henry Bentley (age 18). In 1870 John was working as a cooper in Northampton. In 1880 Jonesfield, MI, John was working as a cooper as well as his son William.

About the year 1862 John married Sarah Wing of Greenfield. She apparently died while John was in the Civil War in 1864, after her son William Seneca Bentley was born in 1863. On December 28, 1863, John enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil War, serving for 1 year 7 months and 23 days as a Private in Company B 16th NY Heavy Artillery until August 21, 1865. After returning to Greenfield and reclaiming young William, he remarried to Nancy Sperbeck. In 1870 he was in Northampton. Ten years later he was in Jonesfield, Saginaw, MI. Based on the birthplace and date of his children, he arrived in Michigan between 1878-1880. The 1890 US Census Veterans Schedule lists John H. Bentley as living in Greenfield, so he returned from Michigan sometime in the previous ten years. John stayed in Greenfield until his death in 1912.

John H. & Nancy Bentley with daughter Lena Royce and her son Henry and daughter Ruth
Scan of Polaroid copy of original photo probably taken on or before 1912. Note written on back: "John H. & Nancy Bentley with daughter Lena Royce and her son Henry and daughter Ruth". The 5/8/1940 obituary of Lena's brother, William, indicates that Lena's married name is Tubbs.

The FamilySearch.org's IGI has a record for John Henry Bentley, b. 4/5/1842 Verona, Oneida, NY, son of William Bentley & Ruth Carver; m. 5/18/1867 Saginaw, Saginaw Co., MI. Another IGI record has similar information.

John Henry Bentley's birthplace is interesting because he is listed in the US Census for Verona, Oneida, NY in the family of William & Louisa Bentley.
