Charlotte D. Russell's Duncan Genealogy says that Samuel was "son of Capt. Jason & Sarah Gates Duncan, b. 15 Feb. 1788 in Dummerston, VT. D. 7 Mar. 1869 in Northville, N.Y., p.b. South Main St. Cemetery, Northville, N.Y., m. 9 Mar. 1817 Brattleboro, VT. to Anna Sergeant, b. 12 Oct. 1788 at Brattleboro, VT., d. 8 Jan. 1875 Northville, N.Y., p.b. South Main St. Cemetery, Northville, N.Y. They came to Cranberry Creek, NY in 1817, then soon moved to Northville."
