Herbert was the seventh child of Henry Claydon & Ann Manks. His birth was recorded in the third quarter of 1864 in the Solihull registration district [FreeBMD Birth Index: “Herbert Claydon, 3rd quarter 1864, Solihull, Vol. 6D pg. 443”].

On November 26, 1879, Herbert, age 15, with mother Ann Claydon and siblings Clara, Nora, Rose, Percival, and Bertie (Burlton) arrived at Castle Garden port of New York on the steamship SS Italy as steerage passengers.
