THE BATH CHRONICLE, THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 1859
FATAL ACCIDENT. -- A lame young man, named Miller, whose parents reside in George Street, came by his death from his own thoughtlessness, at the Aqueduct, Dundas, near this city, on Good Friday. In the afternoon, deceased, who walked with crutches, went with two companions for a row up the river; on getting to the Aqueduct Bridge they left the boat and proceeded to the Brass Knocker Inn to have some refreshment. On their return, deceased, contrary to the advice and strong persuasions of his companions, determined, though it was dark, to go to the other side of the river, with the view of getting back to the boat, which, he believed, though told otherwise, was on that side. To do this he mounted the parapet of the Aqueduct, and proceeded a little distance in safety, but missing his footing he fell to the ground, on the part between the railway and the river. The height of the parapet from the ground is such that to escape being killed on the spot was, humanly speaking, almost impossible. The deceased signalled to his companions he proceeded on his perilous passage; presently his hallooing ceased, but from the distance between them increasing every minute, it was hardly imagined that his calls had terminated from so fatal a cause. It was only on their return to look for him that deceased's companions found how fearfully he had paid the penalty of his heedless conduct. They conveyed his mangled and lifeless body to the Viaduct Inn, where, on being examined by a medical man, it was found that he had fallen on his head and fractured his skull.
