FRANCIS MILLER (1863-1911) & MARY JANE CROOK DREW

Frank Miller / tintype of Frank & Mary with Edith and George, about 1905

Francis "Frank" Miller was born on 12/23/1863 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England to Francis Johnson Miller & Jane Hall. As a boy, Frank was apprenticed to and later became a professional engraver like his father. In 1881 he moved with his parents, brother Henry and sister Leonora to the USA, to work at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, and later at James Walker Tufts Silversmith in Boston. In 1901 he married Mary Jane "Jennie Howard" Crook Drew, the daughter of Hiram Drew and Emma Crook (Mary Jane's mother died young, and she then lived with a foster family in New Beford around 1880). About 1903, Frank & Mary Jane moved to Rochester, NY, and stayed there until about 1905. The family moved for a time to Kill Buck, NY, and finally back to Massachusetts, in the New Bedford and Taunton areas. In 1911 Frank died and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, New Bedford.

Note: Pairpoint Manufacturing Co, New Bedford, Mass., Maker of Gold and Silver Plate, Rich Cut Glass and Fine Decorated Art Goods.

From http://www.antiquesandthearts.com/archive/pair.htm, "In 1880, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was established on property adjoining the Mount Washington factory. The company was formed specifically to make plated britannia metal products to complement the glasswares of Mt Washington. London-born Thomas J. Pairpoint of the Gorham Company in Providence, R.I., was hired as superintendent of the new company, and his name was given to the venture."

Silver companies of Taunton: From Wikipedia: "Taunton's is also known as the Silver City, as it was an historic center of the Silver Industry beginning in the 19th century when companies such as Reed & Barton and F.B. Rogers, Poole Silver and others produced fine quality silver goods in the city."

This census form has errors. The enumerator seems to have mixed Francis and Mary Jane together, using his name and her information. Also, Francis' sister Leonora's name is wrong, and has profession of engraver.
