George Miller was the only son of William MILLER & Leonora JOHNSON. He was born about 1785 in Sherborne, Dorsetshire, England. George was baptized on December 28, 1785 at Sherborne Abbey, based on transcripts of parish records.
George grew up in Sherborne with his mother, stepfather, and two younger sisters. Just before her remarriage, mother Leonora set up legal agreements to keep control of a property inherited from William Miller in Rimpton, Somerset, for the benefit of George, Lucy, and Charlotte. Unfortunately, Lucy and Charlotte died in 1805 at about the ages of 17 & 18, leaving all of the inheritance to George.
When George grew up, he became an attorney, and later provided legal services all over Southwest England, in particular Sherborne, Southampton, Bath, Worcester, and Shepton Mallet. Somewhere along the way he met Harriet Welch possibly in Shepton Mallet, about 17 miles north of Sherborne, or in Mere, Wiltshire. Many years later, George's 2nd son William lived with Thomas and Leonora Hyde, staying at home as a servant and later as an iron monger's clerk and a savings bank actuary.
George's father William died between August 8, 1789 and February 1, 1790, when George was about five years old. It is possible that he and his two younger sisters, Lucy and Charlotte, lived with their remarried (on September 27, 1790) mother and their stepfather, Thomas Hyde, along with their new half-sister Elizabeth Ann Hyde (baptized on September 6, 1791).

As a young adult, William Jr. served as a house servant and lived with his aunt Elizabeth Ann Hyde (daughter of his paternal grandmother Leonora Miller and her 2nd husband Thomas Hyde) and a long-time servant of the Hydes, Sophia Baker.
- Leonora Welch MILLER (b. abt. 1821 in Southampton; d. 1/20/1892 in Bath. Not married, no children.

- Francis Johnson MILLER (b. 1829 in Worcester, Worcestershire, ENG, d. 1/28/1891) m. 3Q 1862 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, ENG to Jane HALL (b. 8/30/1835, d. 10/14/1907).
- Edward Talbort MILLER (b. abt. 1831).
- Edwin MILLER (b. abt. 1834 in Shepton Mallet).
In the 1841 British census, the family of George & Harriet Miller was living in the area of Bath Abbey. The youngest child, Edwin, age about 7 years, was born in Shepton Mallet, so the family probably moved to Bath between 1834 and 1841.
By 1851 George had retired and was living with his family in the Walcot area of Bath. On October 30, 1852, George died of an unknown cause listed as "Visitation of God" by the town coroner. He was buried at Lansdown Cemetery. Widow Harriet Welch Miller stayed in various rental places in the Walcot area of Bath with her two daughters, Lucy and Leonora (Lucy was named after her father's sister and/or for other members of grandmother Leonora's family. Leonora was named after her paternal grandmother, Leonora Johnson Miller Hyde). The ladies did piecework jobs to support themselves, mostly needlework involving Berlin Wool fancy work.
Son Thomas stayed in the Bath area. He likely was apprenticed as a teenager in the trade of carving & gilding, and later became a professional journeyman in that trade. His wife, Emma Kinson, grew up in the Widecombe area of Bath, and was the informant on her mother-in-law's death certificate in 1876.
Lucy and Leonora continued on in Bath living in the same part of town as brother Thomas. The other sons of George & Harriet moved away and developed their own families and careers. George Jr. worked as a portrait artist in the Bristol area until his death in 1870. Francis moved to Sheffield as a professional engraver in the silver plate industry, and then to the United States to continue that trade with his sons Francis Jr. and Henry. Son William stayed in Sherborne with his family. Both Edwin and Edward died young.
George & Harriet were buried in the Walcot parish cemetery of Lansdown near Beckford's Tower, in Section 3 Letter F grave #6 common (3F6). Daughters Lucy & Leonora were buried next to their parents, in 3E26 common. Unfortunately, the cemetery has some protected vegetation, and so isn't much cleared of plant overgrowth, and the tombstones & memorials are not well-kept, with some fallen face-down, broken, eroded, or completely overgrown by trees and bushes. So, the exact locations of the graves are currently unknown.
To-do List:
- Locate marriage record for George & Harriet, possibly in Shepton Mallet or Mere, about 1815.
- Locate baptism of Harriet Welch, daughter of Richard & Elizabeth, in Mere, Wiltshire parish records, possibly in 1796.
