MILLER FAMILY NOTES

The MILLER family was known to be in the Sherborne, Dorsetshire area of southwest England in the late 1700s. The eldest was William Miller, who died about 1790. His only son George lived in southwest England, from the hometown of Sherborne to Southampton, Worcester, and a few other places throughout his career as an attorney, but settling mostly in Bath. He had nine known children. Some stayed in the Bath area and others went further out in their careers, taking them to Sheffield and to the United States of America. George's mother Leonora remarried and had one child, Elizabeth Ann Hyde (half-sister to George). George's son William Miller stayed with Elizabeth before he had a family of his own. There are a number of Miller families in Sherborne from at least the 1600's to the 1800's, so there may very well be other Miller ancestors and descendants there waiting to be discovered.

According to Y chromosome DNA testing (Y-DNA), the ancient homeland of the Miller patrilineage from ten thousand years ago was in an area between England and The Netherlands now covered by the North Sea called Doggerland. When the glaciers of northern Europe melted and sea levels rose, the people of Doggerland migrated to England, Spain, and Germany. The Miller Y-DNA has marker patterns that group it in with millions of other males in Western Europe. Population geneticists defined a group (called a haplogroup) that the Miller lineage belongs to: R1b1b2a1a1d, which is about 3,000 years old and primarily Western European. Further refinements are still in progress, so this haplogroup is likely to be subdivided even further in the years to come. [See my Y-DNA STR test results.]

The name Francis was passed down for several generations. The first known Francis was Francis Johnson, baptized in 1668 at St. Edmund's, Salisbury, son of Robert & Amy. A Francis Johnson married in 1742 at St. Edmund's to Elizabeth Thrasher. It has not yet been conclusively proven, but it is likely Francis & Elizabeth had a daughter, Leonora, who married William Miller in 1783 at St. Edmund's. George, The only son of William & Leonora, had a son named Francis Johnson Miller, born in 1828. Leonora probably had a brother named Francis who may have been an uncle of George Miller.
