DAVID T. SPRINGER (1798-1846) & LOVISA WHITE (1805-1891)

David T. Springer was a resident of Hancock County, Maine, probably the son of John Springer & Susannah GOOGINS, and one of twelve children. David first appears in the US Census in 1830 under his own name, aged 30 to 40 years, with two sons under 5 years (Isaac and Jason), and a wife aged 20 to 30 years (Louisa "Lovisa" White). He had married a few years previously and had purchased some land for $58 on November 4, 1828. Son Isaac was born about 1826, and Jason was born about 1829.

DAVID T. SPRINGER, July 3, (1846). Obituary, unknown source.

"In Ellsworth, July 3d. Mr. David Springer, of Hancock, aged 45. He came to his end, in a sudden and unexpected moment. While at work in the saw mill at E, one of the millmen threw a strip of edging, the end of which hit him in the left side, after which he survived on 25 hours. Whether it was the design of the man to kill Mr. S, is not certain; he is now under bonds for his appearance at the July court. The individual referred to is a young man by the name of Saunders, belonging to Bucksport. Mr. Springer has left indeed a mourning circle, a companion and ten children. May God verify his promise to the deeply afflicted widow and fatherless children. He was a member of the Baptist church in H, and a man of peaceful life, and no doubt has gone to rest.

"The funeral services were attended on the 4th. So it is, while some rejoice, others mourn. Such was our lot on the 4th. Probably we were not alone; we felt, on returning from the mournful scene, that is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, or boisterous celebration."

NOTES:

"It is better to go to a house of mourning Than to go to a house of feasting, Because that is the end of every man, And the living takes it to heart."
- Ecclesiastes 7:2

David's widow, Lovisa White Springer Salisbury, is a descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Tilley White.

In the 1850 US Census, Hancock County, Maine, there are 14 people with the surname Saunders in the town of Bucksport, two of which are male and relatively young: Nathaniel (age 40), and George (age 28).
