In the town of Hancock, enumerated on July 18, 1860, is the family of Luther H. Springer, age 29, born in Maine, farmer, property valued at $200, personal property valued at $160. His wife is Sarah M. (Marshall), age 28, born in Maine, housewife. Also present are Luther M., age 7; Sarah S., age 5; Ida M., age 3; and David H., age 1. A neighbor of note is Isaac Springer, age 34, born in Maine, farmer, property valued at $200, personal property valued at $100. He is probably the eldest son of David & Lovida Springer and so is Luther's older brother. Isaac's wife is Alma, with daughters Caroline J. and Cora A. (In 1880, Alma is a widow staying at her mother-in-law's house with Benjamin Salisbury in Lamoine). Also in town, is the family of Joseph Marshall, age 32, farmer, real and personal property valued at $500 and $300; and Walter Marshall, age 75, clergyman, with wife Abigail. Also present are Luther A., age 17, millman; daughters Sarah, age 15, Ida M., age 12, and Abby L., age 8; and sons David W., age 10, Watson K., age 3, and Leslie A., age 2. Also with the family is Walter Marshal, age 85, clergyman, and wife Abby.

In Hancock, enumerated on June 2, 1880, is the family of L. H. Springer, age 49, born in Maine, blacksmith, with wife Sarah M., age 48; son David, age 20, works in stave mill; Watson, age 14, farm laborer; Leslie, age 12, attending school; and Maud, age 3. Nearby is the widow of Walter Marshall, Abby (Sarah's mother), staying in the Milliken household [and the head of that household is also the census enumerator, Henry C. Milliken]. The family of Sarah's brother Joseph Marshall is also nearby.
